The earwax is a simple waxy oil substance that is known as cerumen medically and is produced by the ear canal. It has a protective effect on the ear, keeping external irritants out and protecting the canal from water as well. However, too much of the earwax can block your ear canal, which may result in temporary or permanent hearing loss and a variety of other problems.
Causes of excess earwax buildup
The production of earwax varies between people – some have more, others have less. The excess earwax buildup doesn’t automatically result in a blockage, but it should be addressed. Surprisingly, earwax blockages in the ear are usually caused by using cotton swabs to remove the wax, which actually push it deeper into the canal.
Main symptoms of earwax blockage and buildup
The accumulation of earwax in the canal manifests through a feeling of fullness in the ears and earache in some cases. Tinnitus is not an uncommon symptom, just like sudden and temporary hearing loss.
The accumulated earwax can lead to a painful ear infection if left untreated. In rare cases, it can also lead to persistent hearing loss, fever, coughing, sneezing and even drainage from your ears. The easiest way to remove the earwax buildup is to irrigate the ear, but you shouldn’t do it on your own. Irrigation must be done by a professional or you’re risking injury to the eardrum and maybe permanent hearing loss.
There are some over-the-counter solutions for removing the excess earwax buildup, but the best way to remove it is with the help of a few natural remedies. Today we’re going to present the best – a simple solution of white vinegar and rubbing alcohol that will melt down the earwax and help you get it all out of your ear. Rubbing alcohol can destroy up to 85% of bacteria it encounters, which makes it a highly powerful antibacterial. On the other hand, white vinegar is another powerful antiseptic which can fight off infections. When combined, the mixture will remove the sticky substance from your ear and prevent a variety of problems.
To prepare the remedy, mix a part of both ingredients, then tilt your head to the opposite side of the painful ear and pour a tablespoon of the remedy in it. Stay like that for a minute or two, then let the mixture come out of your ear. You can repeat the process for a few days in a row – if the pain doesn’t subside, you should visit a doctor.
